thoughts while i look out my window. 08/04/13
i have often wondered if architecture embodies the physical representation of how the material word separates us; how walls help us maintain the notion we are separate rather than part of a collective. i believe humanity, indeed all of life, is connected, scientifically and physically through atoms, spiritually through feelings, and mentally through thoughts. i think we tend to create the inner word into symbols in the outer world. these symbols are the seemingly mundane things we create in the day to day, from the telephone to the computer, we use machines to do what we could do ourselves such as talk and connect. do these symbols also represent our desires to reach out connect where we cannot?

the “whole” for me is reflected in the idea of the city. each city a microcosm of a unit within a unit and in this manner we learn as
much about ourselves as we do about the city and what it represents in relationship to the whole. how does
architecture interact with the city with this idea in mind, the city
representing the collective and architecture the individual?
i see neon lights boldly and proudly displaying the
names of the companies who built them. Is the building really a representation
of woodwards, or is it something greater? is its character simply reduced to a brand
in order to honour the most base and insignificant qualities of humanity? does
this tell us something about who we think we are and what our relationship is
with each other? what has architecture become if it is indeed a symbol of our desires?
how can four walls, this cube, bring me closer to the cube
that is beside me? how can architecture, this thing that delineates the space
from one task to the other, make a connection with the whole where it wants to
divide? what is the architecture of connection, symbiosis, wholeness, and
honesty?
